Orthodontic Problems

Don’t we all wish we were born with perfect teeth?  For those of us who are short on luck, our mouths may have issues with teeth spacing and jaw alignment, resulting in a malocclusion.  A malocclusion is a bite that does not meet properly, and is usually inherited.  That being said, a malocclusion can also be acquired by an accident causing injury to the mouth, or even thumb sucking over a period of time.  Treasured Smiles Pediatric Dentistry can help identify the cause of your child's malocclusion, and recommend options for correction and surgery if necessary.

Underbites, Overbites, and More!

As mentioned, malocclusions can be caused by a variety of factors.  Consult the following list of causes to learn more about what may be happening in your child's mouth!

  • Underbite:  An underbite describes what happens when your lower jaw protrudes out, causing your bottom teeth to sit in front of your top teeth when you bite.
  • Overbite:  An overbite is the reverse of an underbite; your top teeth extend further out over the lower teeth, sometimes causing your bottom teeth to jut into the roof of your mouth.
  • Crowded Teeth: This occurs when there is not enough space between your teeth for new teeth to erupt from your gums.
  • Wide Spaces In Between Teeth (Diastema)

Malocclusions can have both cosmetic and physical effects.  A misaligned bite may cause pain in the jaw, or you may concerned with the way your child's smile looks with gaps in between their teeth.  Regardless of the reason you decide to call Treasured Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we can help you find options for your child's malocclusion correction.
